College of Charleston – Vivarium
LOC provided professional engineering services to the College of Charleston for modification/renovation of an existing space in the historic Charleston district into an Animal Vivarium for keeping and raising animals for observation and research. All mechanical and electrical renovations were specialized to provide the necessary environmental conditions required by the animals housed in each section of the facility. Lighting controls provided variable, timed day/night/red lighting conditions. HVAC distribution and controls were designed to allow for multiple environmental conditions in different areas of the facility depending on the animals housed in the area. This required a combination of mechanical units: 100% outside air rooftop units, packaged rooftop units, and split-systems integrated to provide an extreme range of temperature/humidity/pressure/etc.
LOC provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire alarm/protection engineering and design for the installation of a new elevator, new laboratory spaces, teaching classrooms/labs, animal housing, cage wash facilities, breakrooms, and restrooms. 17 tons of HVAC were added, new electrical service and distribution, full emergency generator backup, full fire alarm and fire protection throughout the facility.
