Charleston, ranked No. 1 US city by Travel + Leisure readers for 6th year in a row, and No. 10 on the World’s Top Cities, had nearly 7.3 million visitors in 2018 and the total economic impact of tourism pushed past a record $8 billion.  In order to better serve the growing number of tourists to the region, Explore Charleston is renovating and upgrading the Charleston Visitor Reception and Transportation Center.

The Charleston Visitor Reception and Transportation Center has been serving guests to Charleston in its current location for nearly 30 years.  The existing building was constructed in stages from 1840 to 1856 and is located in a National Historic Landmark District of Charleston, South Carolina.

Renovations to Visitor Reception and Transportation Center will make this tourist hub more open and welcoming while integrating the latest in technology and amenities.  These improvements will allow for flexibility of the spaces to accommodate an exhibition area, an event space and retail area.

  • 20,000 square foot renovation and upfit
  • 4,500 square foot Visitor’s Market/Retail
  • 3,700 square foot Visitor’s Hall Exhibition
  • 3,000 square foot Events area
  • Modifications to the bus shed area behind the Visitor’s Center to allow the space to be converted into an event venue

About the Charleston Visitor Reception and Transportation Center:

“The Charleston Visitor Reception and Transportation Center is located in the old Deans Warehouse between Ann and John Streets at 375 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. Constructed in stages from 1840 to 1856, it is one of five railroad buildings known collectively as the William Aiken House and Associated Railroad Structures and is listed as a National Historic Landmark District. After an extensive renovation, which utilized much of the original materials of the building, the Visitor Center opened to the public in May of 1991.” https://www.charleston-sc.gov/161/Visitor-Center
